  • Lumpia wrappers are a thin pastry made from flour or cornstarch, eggs and water. Look for them at any Asian grocery store. If unavailable, substitute egg roll wrappers.
  • Plantains can be substituted for the bananas if a potassium restricted diet is not required.
  • Limit to only one portion to keep potassium in control. Each turon contains 1/3 of a medium-sized banana.

Turon is very popular specially when afternoon we don't know that toron is a kind of dessert too, this dessert is very practical for 10 pesos only you can buy turon every where most of the peddlers of what we called"merienda" always had this dessert for them to sell to the costumers . HW:8 Could the Breakfast of Weight Loss Champions be Dessert?

Could the Breakfast of Weight Loss Champions be Dessert?

I saw this in a recent issue of Oprah magazine, and promptly wondered why I always skip the donuts/muffins in the morning.
“Could the Breakfast of Weight Loss Champions Be…Dessert? If you’re trying to lose weight, breakfast may not be complete without dessert: Intriguing new research suggests dieting is more about when to indulge than what to avoid.”
Who knew? That piece of luscious chocolate cake, if consumed at breakfast, may actually help you lose weight! The article went on …
“It sounds too delicious to be true, but according to Israeli researchers, finishing off a protein-rich breakfast with something sweet — like a doughnut, a slice of cake, even chocolate mousse might be the ever-elusive secret to shedding pounds and keeping them off.
“In the study, two groups of overweight and obese people were instructed to consume the same number of calories daily; the difference was that one group ate a modest breakfast each morning, while the other went all out with a high-calorie, high-carb, high-protein meal that included a sugary treat.
“After eight months, the dessert-at-breakfast group had lost an average of 38 more pounds per person than the traditional dieters.”
The article also said that part of the secret is that people who indulge in a dessert early feel more satisfied throughout the day and are less likely to reach for another sweet in the afternoon or evening. Plus the hormones that help convert food to energy are at their peak in the morning, so in theory those sweets are less fattening in the a.m. than in the p.m.
I actually have some anecdotal evidence that this works. Several years ago when I was trying to drop five pounds, I made just two changes to my diet. I drank lots and lots of water and I swore off any sweets after noon. But I continued to enjoy sweets for breakfast or an early lunch. And I lost the weight.

HW:7 Italian Tiramisu

A tiramisu recipe seemed to me to be one of the authentic Italian dessert recipes. After a little research, I found one report that this dessert originated about 1979 or 1980 and maybe not even in Italy. Another report says it was created in Siena and migrated to Florence in the nineteenth century. Recently the mascarpone cheese was added to the original custard. There are other stories linked to tiramisu and it could have begun in Greece or another country. Like the cannoli recipe the tiramisu recipe seemed to me to be one of the authentic Italian dessert recipes.

This is the italian tiramisu , one day I want to make my own version of tiramisu , this is very popular in Italy because the taste of tiramisu is very delicious and the softness of the bread and the creaminess . I'll show the recipe on how this dessert made and the procedures . How do you make this classic Italian delicacy at home? Here is the recipe.Ingredients You Need:Savoiardi sponge fingers – 24Eggs – 6Sugar – 4 tablespoonsMascarpone cheese- 500 gEspresso/mocha – 2 cupsMarsala wine/Tia Maria – 150 mlCocoa powder – 2-3 tablespoonsMethod of Preparation: Separate the egg whites from the yolks. Take the yolks in a pan, add half of the sugar, and beat until smooth. Add the mascarpone with this and blend until creamy (there must be no lumps). In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until a little stiff. Add the remaining sugar and beat until little peaks form. Fold together the egg yolk-sugar-mascarpone mix and the egg white-sugar mix until it reaches a thick creamy consistency.Add together the espresso and the sweetened alcohol, take the sponge fingers one at a time, dip thoroughly in this liquid and place side by side on a big glass dish. Put a layer of the custard on top, drizzle with cocoa powder. Repeat the layers.Cover with foil and refrigerate for at least a few hours (it is better if you could keep these in the fridge all night).Serving Suggestions: Take it out of the refrigerator, cut into the portions you want, and serve. (http://www.diningsecret.com/delicious-drsserts/tiramisu-a-taste-of-sweet-bliss)

CHAPTER 2

DISCUSSION

What are the differences of Filipino desserts from Western desserts?

Now a days, many people knows that the dessert is defined as a sweet course only that serves after a heavy meal like ice creams, fruits, candies and other sweet food. But in western cultures biscuits and pies known as a dessert. Here in Philippines our desserts are “kakanins” so here are the differences between the Filipino desserts from Western desserts.

I. Definition and Types of Desserts

Definitions of desserts include different kinds of sweet foods that people eat after a heavy meal .Desserts defined as the usually sweet course that concludes a meal. The food that composes the dessert course includes but is not limited to sweet foods. There is a wide variety of desserts. In western cultures now including (cakes, cookies, biscuits ,gelatins ,pastries, ice-cream, pies, pudding, and candies). Fruit is also commonly found in dessert courses because of its natural sweetness.

There are different types of desserts, baked desserts, fried desserts, frozen desserts, chilled desserts. Baked desserts are made by putting the ingredients in a hot oven. Baked desserts include cakes, muffins and cookies. Second, fried desserts are made using a cooking process called deep frying. To deep-fry food, a large pot filled with oil is heated, and then the food is placed into the pot. Deep-fried desserts include doughnuts. Third the frozen desserts are made by blending the ingredients in a freezer. Frozen desserts include ice cream and milk shakes and last the frozen dessert this is the popular among of all the types of dessert because chilled dessert made without using the oven or the freezer. Trifle is an English dessert made by soaking ladyfinger biscuits in sherry, covering them with whipped cream, and then letting it chill in the refrigerator. Some types of instant pudding and instant mousse desserts can be made without cooking; a person simply mixes the instant pudding powder with milk and chills it in the refrigerator.

II. Filipino Desserts

The Philippines is best known for its numerous mouth watering desserts. A majority of desserts are very sweet, but one bite of these desserts is like a taste of heaven. The following names of popular desserts will let you find out on your own what they are made of. These are the Halo-halo, leche flan, turon, suman, ube, bibingka, buko pandan, yema, cuchinta, ice-cream macapuno and many many more they are the desserts that very popular here in the Philippines.

The common ingredients that they used are sticky rice and of course sugar to make it sweeter, flour and different kind of fruits like banana. Filipino desserts matched with the occasion to know what dessert is perfect for the occasion or in weather. For example the best and most popular dessert in summer is Halo-halo because apart from spending too much money to eat a dessert to make you feel cooler and refresh halo-halo is made up of a fruit that contains protein, potassium and fibers. You make satisfied yourself plus you eat healthy without hesitating that you can be fat by eating a dessert. Because in other countries their desserts is not healthy like cakes it contains many sugar and it depends on what ingredients that the maker put it there, for example chocolate it compose a lot of carbohyrdrates that makes people fat if it has no control in eating that kind of dessert.

III. Western Desserts

As I said the western desserts is puddings and cakes but not all their desserts is process food to make it sweeter the fruit is included as a dessert in western culture because of the natural sweetness. In Italy different desserts were born for different reasons, some dry cookie-like desserts were thought to be made for sailors who needed long lasting food items to take on their voyages. Other more elaborate desserts were created to commemorate important historic events or holidays in Italy. Many of these recipes have been passed down through families for generations. Great care is taken to preserve their traditional characteristics.

As you maybe know as I recalled a few times in reading information, Italy has many differences from region to region. These differences deal with language or dialects, traditions, way of living, of thinking, and of course, food. One of the most popular desserts in Italy is tiramisu. Tiramisu is one of the best-known and best-loved Italian deserts. Somewhat surprising for such a famous recipe, it can only be traced back to about 1970, when it apparently was developed in the northern Italian

The name actually means "pick me up", and with lots of sugar and the strong Espresso coffee, that is just what it does. The raw egg yolk is also supposed to help people recover from certain strenuous honeymoon activity. I think the stunning taste comes from the creamy, sweet Mascarpone creme, and the slightly bitter combination of coffee and real cocoa powder which contains theobromine, supposed to make people happy.

Filipino desserts vs. Western Dessert

Filipino dessert is more on natural resources than western dessert because most of the ingredients that western culture used are processed like the mascarpone crème it is an Italian triple cream dessert that usually found in tiramisu we know that cheese is made up of cow milk but before it come up as a cheese it had goes to the process. But in Filipino desserts they usually use a natural like fresh milk, eggs and fresh fruits.

HW:4 Survey Report

I did my survey report by asking 20 people including friends, classmates and my family; I asked them about on what they preferred a Filipino dessert or the foreign one, if they had to choose a chocolate dessert person or a fruit dessert person, did they have their own recipe in making dessert and does dessert affect their lives and how. These are the question that come up in my research, this survey question I made it online , and it answered online it is very easy than printing a lot of papers and give it to your classmates because all they have to do is choose yes or no and why. And this question is very helpful as the researcher to be able to know if a lot of people are interested not just in other common food but also in dessert.
As the result of my survey report a lot of Filipino still wants our own specialties in terms of desserts and more people is concern about their health because they preferred more in fruit dessert that chocolate dessert but not all of them has a recipe or interest in making their own desserts or version of dessert but all of them answered that dessert affect their mood and life when they in not in a good mood when they eat a dessert their bad mood turns into a good mood.

The result of my survey is accurate because many people still now what’s the best and who will be patronized in terms of desserts and a lot of people care about their health and know how to control eating too much of desserts and the effects of desserts in their lives is good not bad.
